Internet access for every EU citizen

European Union is adopting an ambitious plan to secure internet access for all its citizens. Currently about every fourth EU citizen enjoys this access.

At a recent meeting, EU ministers responsible for telecommunications and employment decided to start a process which in four years would raise the percentage of people having internet access to 43%.

According to Erkki Liikanen, the EU Commissar responsible for information technology, currently the percentage of people with internet access is 28%. The ultimate aim is raise the figure to 100%.

The plan was discussed in a meeting held in Luleå, Sweden. Ministers did not reveal exact figures about the cost of the project. The plan will probably be discussed in March in a meeting of EU heads of government. The meeting will be held in Stockholm.
