European Union is adopting an ambitious plan to secure internet access for all its citizens. Currently about every fourth EU citizen enjoys this access.
At a recent meeting, EU ministers responsible for telecommunications and employment decided to start a process which in four years would raise the percentage of people having internet access to 43%.
According to Erkki Liikanen, the EU Commissar responsible for information technology, currently the percentage of people with internet access is 28%. The ultimate aim is raise the figure to 100%.
The plan was discussed in a meeting held in Luleå, Sweden. Ministers
did not reveal exact figures about the cost of the project. The plan will probably
be discussed in March in a meeting of EU heads of government. The meeting will
be held in Stockholm.
